We are committed to driving responsible and sustainable production, that upholds the rights and wellbeing of the people who make our clothes and respects and helps to protect the planet around us. Essentially, we are working to build an ethical supply chain where chemicals, waste and carbon emissions are reduced, and where the labour rights of those who make our Yaks are respected. We know that in order to make significant progress on this journey, we need to partner with leading organisations who can support us in achieving the high standards that we set for ourselves.

We are incredibly proud to have been accepted for Fair Labor Association membership in July 2023.

FLA is an international network promoting human rights at work and its membership includes companies, universities and civil society organisations. They have worked for more than 20 years toward a future where responsible business means that fair working conditions are the standard, not the exception.

Our commitment to ensuring fair labour practices and promoting human rights throughout our supply chain has always been a priority for our business and with the support of FLA, we can build upon our Responsible Sourcing Program and ensure that we have the expertise in place to drive our work forward in this area.

Sedex is a membership organisation that provides one of the world’s leading online platforms for companies to manage and improve working conditions in global supply chains. Lucy & Yak, along with our all of our direct suppliers, are members of Sedex.

We have partnered with Greenly in order to help measure our carbon footprint and identify where our most considerable emissions are. This targeted analysis of our operations means we can prioritise where to start reducing our impact throughout all parts of the business sustainably..

Small Brands Working Group

Lucy & Yak are part of a working group which consists of CSR teams from small-medium sized UK brands who come together to share knowledge on ethical and sustainable topics.

This year Lucy & Yak have been re-certified following our audit for GOTS and GRS, with the addition of OCS (Organic Content Standard).

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres.  As well as the environmental requirements for the standard, social criteria, including working conditions and labour standards are assessed and verified throughout the supply chain, backed up by independent third-party certification.  As Lucy & Yak’s ethical behaviours set the standard we expect of our supply base, we also believe it is essential to be certified ourselves.Certification of a product is more than just a label; it is a symbol of trust and transparency in the textile supply chain – from field to finished goods in stores.

The Organic Content Standard (OCS) is a global standard used to verify organically grown raw materials which are used in products. L&Y products which carry the OCS label will have been verified to contain organic materials by a third party.
Our recycled content is made using a unique recycling process.
Post-consumer PET bottles are used to produce high-quality 100% recycled texturised filament yarn and chips. This yarn can then be used in all types of apparel, bags and upholstery.
Since launching our Buyback scheme in January 2023, 4,000 Yaks have been returned to our stores and given a new loving home and saved from landfill! We have 6 stores (7 on the way) and expanding our retail network means more people can bring their old Yaks back.

New warehouse

This May we moved into our new warehouse, still in our hometown of Barnsley. 40,000 square ft in size, the space is significantly larger, giving us more capacity to operate and for more people to enjoy Yaks. We’ve installed solar panels on 10% of the roof of the warehouse, powering our offices on site. We are working on increasing the number of solar panels to power more of our operation with the natural energy from the sun. The warehouse is powered with infrared heating, which heats the person and objects in the space rather than the whole room. This enables us to be more efficient with the energy we use and waste less. Rainwater is also harvested, stored and then used to operate our toilets within the warehouse. Thank goodness for all the northern rain!
