At Lucy & Yak we believe that life is about getting out there and finding the things that bring you joy. For many of us here that means heading down to the seafront, surfing and swimming, or simply taking a stroll along the beach to slow down and take in the sound of the waves.

Our waterways heal us, but as time goes on, they become more sick. Their health is fundamental for life on earth and tackling the climate crisis, but our seas and rivers face huge challenges: sewage contamination, plastic pollution, ocean habitat destruction and specie depletion. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Surfers Against Sewage to shine a spotlight on our sh*tty seas and how we can all do our bit to help keep them clean and healthy.

Introducing, Turning the Tide. Created with artist Tan Zi Xi, our latest limited edition collection celebrates the magic of our seas and waterways and how vital it is to protect them. 100% of the profits from this collection will go to Surfers Against Sewage who are dedicated to fighting for our oceans and waterways that we all depend on.

It’s time to Turn the Tide on our waterways.

SURFERS AGAINST SEWAGE

Surfers Against Sewage began life 35 years ago as a response from the surfing community to the shocking state of our coastline. Back then, anyone who ventured into the water often found themselves swimming in raw sewage. There are tales of sanitary towels on heads and human poo sandwiched between bodies and boards. Enough was enough. What started as a local uprising is now a vital community of nationwide Ocean Activists fighting to see the ocean thrive. Our numbers have swelled well beyond just surfers, from swimmers to sandcastle builders, beach lovers to dog walkers, and everyone else in between who cares about our coastline. And our causes have swelled beyond water quality too. Because there are numerous threats to the ocean – and to our life on earth as a result. A lot has changed in the three decades since Surfers Against Sewage was formed. But we’re still a group of water lovers fighting back, to clean up the ocean we all depend on. It’s just that now there are more of us, with more corners to fight.

INCLUSIVE OCEAN SPACES / CLUBS / COMMUNITIES

"Currently within Surfers Against Sewage, we have been focusing on how we ensure Equity, diversity and Inclusion are embedded within all of ourinternal and external tributaries. We don’t view it as an ‘add on’ so building the culture from within has been and will continue to be a journey we all take together alongside our growing audience.

A key part of this is collaboration, so if you are looking to engage, support or collaborate with organisations, please have a look at this list of groups as a potential starting point."

I would strongly recommend heading to All The Elements for a really comprehensive list of diverse communities in outdoor spaces (including oceans)

I would also recommend heading to the We Are Ocean community page for

accessible discussions around ocean literacy.

The comfort in belonging through our waterways

We all rely on water to survive, and we rely on a connection to water to help us thrive. Yet so many of us don’t feel that water, be it for pleasure and relaxation or for protection and conservation, is a space that is welcoming to us or where we belong.
