What your clothes are made from really matters. That’s why we put so much care into choosing fabrics we truly believe in.

We use recycled, organic, and dead-stock fabrics, and we’re incredibly proud of the work our teams do to source materials responsibly, while still being affordable and accessible.

We’re always learning, always improving, and always trying to make thoughtful choices about the materials we use.

Below is a little more about the fabrics you’ll find in our products

Organic Cotton (GOTS & OCS Certified)

Organic cotton is one of our most-loved materials, and for good reason. It is a natural, breathable fibre that feels great to wear and supports more responsible farming and manufacturing practices.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the world’s leading certification for organic fibres. It goes beyond the growing of cotton, covering all the processing and manufacturing stages, with strict environmental and social criteria. This includes verified labour standards, working conditions, and responsible chemical use, all backed by independent third-party certification.

We believe certification is about more than a label. It’s a symbol of trust and transparency, and it reflects the ethical standards we expect across our supply chain. GOTS-certified cotton must also meet OEKO-TEX® requirements, meaning there are strict limits on harmful chemicals used in dyes and processing.

Some of our products also carry the Organic Content Standard (OCS), which verifies that the cotton content has been independently checked to confirm it is organically grown.

GRS Recycled Polyester

Our recycled polyester is made using post-consumer plastic waste, giving existing materials a new life instead of letting them go to landfill. All of our recycled polyester is GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certified, which means it meets verified standards for recycled content, responsible chemical management, and fair labour practices.

Recycled polyester allows us to work more circularly - taking what’s already out there and transforming it into durable, high-quality clothing.

None of our products are designed to end up in landfill, and we’re committed to keeping materials in use for as long as possible. We would also encourage anyone to use Guppyfriend washing bags when washing synthetic fabrics, helping to reduce microfibre shedding during laundry.

LENZING™ ECOVERO™ Viscose

LENZING™ ECOVERO™ fibers are made from wood, a natural and renewable raw material carefully sourced from responsibly managed forests. The wood taken from nature is purposefully balanced with forest growth rates, to ensure the continued availability of this valuable resource.

LENZING™ ECOVERO™ fibers are made with at least 50% less carbon emissions and water consumption*.

Naturally lightweight, LENZING™ ECOVERO™ fibers give woven and knitted fabrics a tactile softness and flowing drape.

*Compared to generic (unbranded) viscose Results based on LCA standards (ISO 14040/44) and available via Higg MSI Version 3.9.1 (December 2024).

Deadstock fabric

Deadstock fabrics are materials left over from our own production - offcuts that would otherwise go unused. Reusing them is one more way we try to be resourceful and creative with our materials.

While this isn’t a fully closed-loop system, it helps us reduce waste by making the most of what we already have.

These fabrics are unique to Lucy & Yak, and we’re very proud to repurpose them into all sorts of accessories such as bags, scrunchies, purses, headscarves, key rings and more!

Our Preferred Materials

We prioritise materials that align with our values of responsibility, durability, and transparency. These include:

 • GOTS-certified organic cotton

• OCS-certified organic cotton

• GRS-certified recycled polyester

• LENZING™ ECOVERO™ viscose

• Deadstock fabrics from our own production

• Linen

We know there’s no such thing as a perfect fabric, but we’re committed to choosing better ones, being honest about our processes, and continuing to improve as we go.

We use OEKO-TEX® certified dyes on all of our organic cotton. This certification ensures strict controls on harmful substances and confirms that our dyes meet REACH(EU chemicals legislation) requirements. In simple terms: it means safer chemistry, carefully managed.

Long lasting

Hemp fabric has an incredible strength.

Over time, the fibres will soften but won’t degrade or pill making Items last decades if proper care is taken.

Naturally pest resistant

Hemp is naturally pest resistant so it can be grown organically without the aid of chemicals.

Even more breathable

Hemp is breathable and lightweight, yet very durable. We've blended our hemp with cotton to make it softer than its natural form.

Kinder to the environment

Hemp is a densely and quickly growing plant. It uses minimal water and is capable of capturing other carbon emissions from the environment making it a carbon negative raw material.
