Candace Reels on the Power of Intersectional Feminism and Fashion
I'm Candace Reels, a Los Angeles native, intersectional feminist, culture curator, self-love advocate, fashion lover, and fierce champion of women's empowerment.
I’m the founder of Female Collective, a global community which empowers, uplifts, supports, and celebrates women everywhere. Through daily affirmations, cultural conversations, and community events, I remind women and non-binary people everywhere that they are loved, they matter, and they are worthy.
Female Collective is a safe, inclusive platform for learning, sharing, healing, and growing—a community for those who reject the social constructs of the patriarchy and status quo. We unite, activate, and amplify voices of all races, ages, sexualities, and classes to encourage radical self-love and self-care.
I’m passionate about discussing the importance of mental health, intersectional feminism, self-care, and fashion. These topics are extremely meaningful to me, and I strive to discuss them in a way that is approachable for others so they feel comfortable talking about them, too. I want to encourage people to express themselves and be their authentic selves, regardless of societal pressures.
My style combines colorful, expressive, bold, mix & match, masc/feminine. I'm a shy person who enjoys expressing myself through my clothing. Fashion is fun, and I love experimenting with different colors, textures, and patterns that don't typically go together to see what I can create. I always believe that as long as you feel good in your outfit, that's all that matters!
When I’m shopping for clothes, colorful pieces with fun patterns always speak to me, and I can mix them with staple items in my closet. I'm always searching for unique pieces that I can wear for years.
In my styling of this collection, I aimed for a very 70s/Freaks and Geeks vibe. The patchwork and floral designs give off awesome 70s vibes, and I wanted to embrace that. The 70s were a great time for fashion, with its patterns, colors, and textures. So I kept that theme but added a modern touch with specific accessories for each look.
When styling a new outfit, I usually start by choosing one piece of clothing and then build by adding other pieces. Sometimes, I begin with a specific shoe or hat I want to wear and then coordinate different pieces to complement that item. Other times, I find inspiration from things I've seen on TV, people I've seen in real life, or by exploring ideas on Pinterest. I enjoy changing my style frequently, so whenever something inspires me, I immediately look for ways to incorporate it into my current wardrobe. Fashion should be fun, so I always encourage people to experiment and see what they can come up with.
Fall is my favorite season because I love layering pieces together and finding new ways to mix and match. All of these pieces will become staples in my closet, from the floral denim jacket to the long black denim skirt. I can't wait to style them in many different ways and add colorful touches each time, whether with hats, shoes, or bags.
When dressing for an event, I like to know all the details first, such as whether it will be indoors and if there's a dress code. Then, I imagine an outfit in my head before picking it out from my closet. If the outfit doesn't look exactly as I imagined, I'll change some pieces, but I won't completely change the whole outfit.
I love how colorful and fun the clothing from Lucy & Yak is. Their clothes always put a smile on my face. Not only are their pieces colorful and fun, but they are also comfortable. As I've gotten older, I've realized the importance of comfort in clothing. Fashion should not be painful. If you want to look good and feel comfortable, Lucy & Yak is the brand for you!
