At Lucy and Yak, we really want to make a positive difference in the world. We want to show that you can have a business that makes great clothes without exploiting people or the environment.
We’re doing our best and learning as we go and one of the things we want to do is to shine a light on issues that need addressing and highlight the amazing work of charities working to make the world a better place. So today we’re shouting about The International Justice Mission. They are dedicated to tackling modern slavery.
In 1787, William Wilberforce wrote in his diary that he was determined to rid Britain of slavery. It is to our shame that in 2019 there are actually more people in slavery now than there have ever been before. ⠀ ⠀
The biggest reason slavery is still a huge problem is that it is a multi-billion dollar industry. People are making enormous amounts of money from the exploitation of an estimated 40 million men, women, and children. IJM works with local justice systems to bring traffickers to justice. They also work to ensure that laws against slavery are enforced. To get rid of slavery forever, we need to make it unprofitable for slave owners and traffickers; but we also need to support those who have been exploited. For many, they end up in slavery because they were desperate. IJM also provides care packages, food, housing, counseling and education to those who need it, to get them out of, and keep them out of slavery. So far, they’ve rescued more than 50,000 people from slavery and violence.
At Lucy and Yak, we are committed to giving our staff a fair and living wage within safe, stable jobs. We believe our supply chain should be transparent but we also know how complex that is; it’s impossible to do it alone and working with organisations like IJM is the only way companies can make lasting change.
So, for the next week until Tuesday 10th December, all donations to IJM UK to help stop child slavery will be DOUBLED through The Big Give.
